- Trade licensing in Canada is set by each province or territory. Electrical, gas and plumbing are licensed trades almost everywhere (for example ESA for electrical and TSSA for gas in Ontario), so check your provincial regulator that the contractor is certified for the work before you hire.
- A construction lien is a real risk: in every province an unpaid subcontractor or supplier can register a lien against your home even if you already paid the main contractor. Hold back the statutory amount (commonly around 10%) and get signed lien waivers as you pay.

- Welder is a Red Seal trade. For structural or load-bearing welds, the welder/shop should be certified by the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) to the relevant CSA standard, and the work should follow engineered, sealed drawings.
- For railings, gates and repairs, judge on relevant certification, insurance and verifiable sample work; for anything structural, insist on CWB certification and a permit where required.
- Get a written scope: the material, weld type and finish (galvanising or paint to resist corrosion), and on-site vs shop work.
- Check liability insurance and a current workers' compensation clearance (WSIB/WorkSafeBC/WCB).
Warning signs of a rogue contractor
- Structural welding with no CWB certification or no engineered drawings.
- No corrosion protection on exterior steel.
- No proof of insurance or WCB coverage.
- Large cash deposit, or no written scope and no sample work.
