  • Use a written contract with a clear scope and payment tied to completed stages, and understand provincial lien rights: a construction (builders') lien can be registered against your home if subcontractors go unpaid.
  • Check liability insurance and a current WCB/WSIB clearance so you aren't liable for on-site injuries.
