  • Trade licensing in Canada is set by each province or territory. Electrical, gas and plumbing are licensed trades almost everywhere (for example ESA for electrical and TSSA for gas in Ontario), so check your provincial regulator that the contractor is certified for the work before you hire.
  • A construction lien is a real risk: in every province an unpaid subcontractor or supplier can register a lien against your home even if you already paid the main contractor. Hold back the statutory amount (commonly around 10%) and get signed lien waivers as you pay.
  • Look for consistent reviews across several named sources, not one polished profile.
  • Check any credential evidence, and that the business details independently check out.
  • Get a written quote and keep guarantee, insurance and payment terms in writing.

Verify before you hire

  • Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrical contractor in most provinces: in Ontario verify the contractor's ECRA/ESA licence with the Electrical Safety Authority; in BC, electrical contractors are licensed and permitted through Technical Safety BC.
  • Electrical work requires a permit and inspection (the ESA in Ontario, Technical Safety BC, or your provincial/municipal authority): confirm the contractor takes out the permit and you receive the inspection sign-off.
  • Ask for the electrician's Certificate of Qualification (the Construction & Maintenance Electrician is a Red Seal trade): the contractor licence is the business, the Certificate of Qualification is the person.
  • Check liability insurance and a current workers' compensation clearance (WSIB/WorkSafeBC/WCB).

Warning signs of a rogue contractor

  • No ECRA/ESA or provincial electrical-contractor licence you can verify on the regulator's register.
  • Won't pull an electrical permit or arrange the inspection: uninspected wiring is a fire risk and can void your home insurance.
  • Only an apprentice attends with no licensed electrician, or offers a cheap cash job with no permit.
  • No proof of insurance or WCB coverage.

  • What is your electrical-contractor licence number (e.g. ECRA/ESA), and can I verify it?
  • Will you take out the electrical permit and arrange the inspection?
  • Is the work done or supervised by a Certificate-of-Qualification electrician?
